Inaugural Post: the Say-So

As with any creative endeavor, blogging can't be forced, but it does need a deadline.  There must be a time when the creation, however flawed it may be, must go forth to the world.  And now is that time.

I thought it would make sense to do an initial post introducing the blog and what I hope to do with it.  The blog is meant to be a commentary on all things social media that happen to cross my path as well as a more directed study as part of the class I am teaching at the university level, social media in business.

After a discussion with my students, we decided on the Blogger platform, which seems to be a good solid workhorse. The pros and cons of Blogger versus Wordpress have been well articulated here and here.  Previous posts at my other social media blog, Tumbleweeds, can be viewed at http://meltonjim.tumblr.com/

Why the title "Say Social"?  Two reasons.  One is simply that it rolls off the tongue.  A second is that talk about social media has become ubiquitous, and yet much of it is vapid.  If you want something to be cutting-edge, all you have to do is say it's social.  What that means is not always clear.

Another sense of the title can be found in a fragment of the title "Say Social" -- the word "say-so," which has several meanings, any of which might be applied to this blog:

1. one's unsupported assertion or assurance
2. an authoritative pronouncement <left the hospital on the say–so of his doctor>
3. a right of final decision : say <has the ultimate say–so on what will be taught>

I suspect that all three of these will apply at different times, perhaps at the same time.  In any case, I look forward to having my say.
